Our Patriotic holiday this month was President's Day. Remember when we used to celebrate Abraham Lincoln's Birthday and George Washington's Birthday separately? I was reminded of this at Chapter last night. Sometimes it seems that those we should look up to and use in life as role models are no longer important.... They no longer each have their own day...
It always feels good to say the Pledge of Allegiance at meetings! I am grateful to be part of this country and thankful to those who have gone before us and were inspired to create these United States. It is good to be with others who also take pride in our Pledge and our country.

The Traveling Gavel
It has been a long time since I have commented on the Travels of the Gavel... To be honest I have had no clue where it has been. It hasn't been to Forbestown in a long time! Rumor has it that it is possibly at Gridley at the time of this writing. Last night at Amapola's Chapter, we were asked to take notice of a certain award on display near the secretary's desk. This certain person, who I can't identify because I do not have a signed release, orated in his usual jovial form and informed us that last year Orland Lodge had provided a wonderful dinner as they had been the recipients of the 2012 award.... We wish to congratulate Oroville Lodge #103 with their award for retaining the gavel for the longest period of time this past year and, dear Worshipful of Oroville Lodge, the burning question is.... What's for dinner?! |

Worshipful John has his first official meeting as Master under his belt. Forbestown is now having to concentrate on preparing for the visit of Grand Lodge in June. This task that would seem insurmountable except for the support of many wonderful persons!

We congratulate those who had Birthday's or their Raised Anniversary this month!

The History Corner...
In March's Trestleboard I discussed W. W. Braddock, Forbestown's Past Master of 1878, who moved around quite a bit from Forbestown to Gridley and eventually to Stockton. I was looking for a little more evidence that the School teacher from Gridley was also our Past Master....
I have since reaffirmed that people are very mobile! We have had, from the beginning, members who came from Oroville and who were found later in San Francisco. Many brethren visited from lodge to lodge, the mode of travel being their two feet or maybe horseback or wagon or stage. A trip that takes us little more than an hour or so by car could take our earliest brethren a day or more... yet they traveled.
This week, while researching, I browsed through the diaries of Gaylord S. W. Twogood Past Master of Forbestown 1879, and came upon his travels during the period just before qualifying for Master. He had gone to Gridley to be taught by ...... Brother Braddock!
Saturday Jan 11th I take the train for Biggs at 1:00 p.m. We pass Lomo, Oakville and arrive at Gridley Station at 2 o'clock and twenty minutes - some rain falling. We arrive at Biggs Station three p.m. I find my friend Mr. Braddock at La Pointe store in Biggs Station. He and I go to Mr. Downing's residence where I have a good room and at home with every necessary comfort. Eve. B. and I enter upon our work which is a huge undertaking on my part, requiring much patience on his. The rain has nearly ceased.
I have read through the diaries before but not paying as much attention as I did to this section this time around. Becoming more familiar with the Past Masters and their names has helped me make progress as now a name will leap off of a page at me....
Further reading of Brother Twogood's diaries can be done at http://www.yubaroots.com/nuggets/twogood8.htm

Here's another discovery that I thought was very exciting! I had never seen this booklet before. This is the 100 year anniversary of Forbestown Lodge No. 50 from 1954! I scanned it today and I will post it on our history page if you wish to access it.
