It is that "Wonderful Time" of the year and I am sure we have all been busy with family and friends or other social gatherings. We hope you enjoyed the Holidays! Not only did we have the Holidays to celebrate, but there are numerous installations to attend also. Forbestown has their Installation coming up in just about a week. Because of the Holidays, Forbestown has bumped up their January Stated and Installation to the 2nd Saturday of January which is January 9th. Installation should begin at about 5 p.m.
Outgoing Worshipful Master John Davis, PM
After having the honor of serving in the East for both 2014 and 2015, Worshipful John Davis PM is passing the hat along. His journey to the East has been interesting, challenging at times and instilled some personal growth and change along the way. It truly has been a learning experience to say the least. He's enjoyed the activities that Masonry and life have come to offer in the last few years.

Burt Mansell PM 1931

The History Corner
I am always hoping for a bit of history or info on our members from the past and our Past Masters. It is, to me, interesting to discover who the members of Forbestown are that have served as Masters, whether it was at Forbestown or other in other Lodges. What their background was and just who they were.
I had the opportunity to discover a bit of information on Past Master Burt Mansell. He was Master of Forbestown Lodge in 1931. According to records Burt Mansell was born near old Fort Boise, Idaho on the 9th of May 1879. He was a resident of Oroville since 1914. At the time of his death in June of 1971, at the age of 92, Mr. Mansell was retired from a variety of professions including school bus driver, gold dredge operator, plumber, carpenter and fireman. He was still active in weather record keeping, dancing, and his "organizations". These organizations included Forbestown Lodge No. 50, Oroville Commandry No. 5, Knights Templar Franklin Chapter 20, Royal Arch Masons and Ben Ali Temple. |
An interesting tid-bit about his membership in Ben Ali -- At the time of his death Bro. Mansell was the oldest candidate ever initiated into Ben Ali Shrine. This took place, according to the record, three years prior to his death. I am assuming he was 89. Would be interesting to know if anyone has since been initiated who has broken this record...
His other memberships included - Oroville Pyramid No. 19 (feel free to enlighten me on this group!) Order of Sciots, Oroville High Twelve Club, Oroville Shrine Club, Butte County Council, Royal and Select Masters Paradise, Amapola Chapter 119 (now 35) OES, Del Oro Court 102 Order of Amaranth. Wow!
Bro. Mansell loved dancing and considered it a cure of all ills. He was also an honorary life member of Oroville Pageant Riders, one of the first Oroville Volunteer Firemen to retire and a retired member or the El Medio fire department and member of the Wyandotte Grange. Brother Mansell was able to remain active in all these groups because not only did he still dance at the age of 92 but he also still drove. Sadly, he was driving when he passed away. He was killed in a one car accident about a half block from his home. His car had failed to make a curve in the 2700 block of Michell Avenue and crashed into the Oroville Union High School District bus barn....
