Called From Labor
This month, on the 10th of April, Brother and Past Master Ralph Whiteley was called from labor. Until just the last few months Brother Ralph had stayed active in lodge. He last coached our current Worshipful Master John Davis whom he had the pleasure of seeing sit in the East as he said he would live long enough to do. It was while then current WM Dan Norton was out of town, but John was in the East. Although he was unable to attend installation he was well aware that John had been installed as WM as he knew he would be.
Brother Ralph was born June 18, 1916 in Sterling Colorado. He graduated from Mt. Shasta high school in California and had a long career in logging which brought him to Clipper Mills and Forbestown Lodge. He was raised in Forbestown Lodge in May of 1954 and became Worshipful Master in 1960 which was the year his late son Raymond was raised in Forbestown Lodge. He received his Hiram award in 1989 and his 50 year pin in 2004. We have missed Ralph's attendance the last few months and will continue to miss him and cherish our memories of him. Masonic graveside services were held at the Brownsville Cemetery, Bro. Dan Norton PM presiding and Bro. Harland Roy PM - Chaplain. The family asks, that if you wish, donations be made to Shriners Hospital for Children 1-800-241-GIFT or Yuba Feather Historical Association, P.O. Box 54 Brownsville, CA 95919 |
There has been a mighty work going on
at the Lodge. We have some very dedicated people that have been working on the Lodge, giving it some needed TLC. The Jobies and DeMolay have also pitched in with their youthful energy and strength in doing some much needed scrubbing and cleaning. There has been painting going on and it is exciting to see the work that has been completed. We all know how time is precious and hard to come by. We are so grateful and thankful to those who can take a bit of time out of their busy schedules and contribute some love and care to our Lodge. Thank you! |

Looking for a way to honor our Veterans? What you see at Christmas is beautiful - Wreaths decorating our Veterans graves at the "New" Oroville Cemetery. Getting them ready to place is the hard part and where a lot of help is needed as the wreath count now exceeds 3,600. Do you know someone who would like to honor the Veterans? Share this message with them. Anyone can help! 2 hours per month is all that is asked! We will be cleaning and fixing the wreaths, once again, on Saturday May 17th. Help is very much desired! The project takes place in the basement of the Oroville Masonic building. The door is located at the base of the stairs at the back of the building where you park. Treat yourself to lunch at one of the local restaurants and then join us for a couple hours of dusty work....

The History Corner
This month I got to spend an afternoon with a special lady! She is someone who bubbles over with a great amount of knowledge of the history of this area. We are blessed with two of these ladies whose family roots run back into the 1800’s and they are full of history of the area. My "history teacher" for the afternoon was Laverne Daley, wife of our Tiler, Bob Daley P.M. Her husband Bob sits in the Tiler chair which his grandfather sat in at Lodge, carrying on a tradition. Laverne took me to two special cemeteries; well to me they are special as they go back to the 1800s. After visiting the first we drove, probably the long way, through Butte and Yuba Counties and I got to listen to the best kind of history lesson. School was never like this! Laverne showed me where the flume from Clipper Mills came down into the Valley and where the ponds were that the flume emptied into. She showed me ranches and told some of their history. She spoke of some of the grand old homes one of which was eventually lost to fire. Many of the old homes here end their days that way. Why did I not record this history lesson? We stopped at the Oak Grove Cemetery where a good number of the Daley’s are buried, so many Masonic emblems! More history silently lies in that cemetery. There is an Acacia tree planted there to honor Masonry. It is not very big and when first planted years ago, a huge tub was put in the ground and filled with water which seeped through a hole to keep the new little tree alive while it took root. It still struggles to survive. We finished up our afternoon together at Bob and Laverne’s home where Bob was waiting out on the porch. It’s a beautiful spot and part of the old ranch. The silent old homestead is across the road. Quietly standing for all to see is a handsome old barn on the hillside. Bob proudly points out that his Grandfather, a Mason, built that barn in 1900. That barn has stood the test of time reaching 114 years on that hill side. Can you imagine the history that has taken place during those years? And Bob is a testament to the Daley family’s involvement in the history of Masonry and Forbestown Lodge No. 50 F. and A. M.

A REQUEST - I have been working, albeit slowly, at gathering information (the good kind) on our Past Masters and some of the members of Forbestown Lodge and the other Lodges that eventually joined Forbestown - those Lodges being St. Louis, Gibsonville and Jefferson (La Porte). It is an interesting journey which I am enjoying even though at times it can overwhelm me. Now I have a bit of a project I would love to have our Brothers, their ladies, families etc., take part in. Tell me about yourself, ladies would you tell me about your gentlemen? Your family members can do the same. Tell me about the Past Masters for whom there is nothing written about or even if there is a bit of history on them, tell me more! What were they like? Where did they live? What did they do? What brought them to Forbestown Lodge? What talents did or do they have? What was their passion in life? Tell me about a special member of the Lodge that I don't know about. Our wall is blank on many of you and our brethren from the past and I would like to fill in the blanks.... And tell me about some of these special ladies that have supported their gentlemen in Masonry through the years. Who did you know and what did you love about them? Send me a note, write me a letter.... DON'T BE BASHFUL! I'd love to see more than just a name and a face in our history.
From Grand Lodge. This looks like it would be great to attend!
