August Doings
|
Time to wrap up the month of August. I have been watching the news about Texas and the great devastation taking place with the massive amounts of flooding. I've also kept tabs on the enormous conflagrations taking place in Montana, not to mention our own fires here. I can't help but send out thoughts and prayers to all of the people affected by these disasters. And now, once again, I find devastation taking place in our own backyard. The Ponderosa fire burning in the Berry Creek area just below Forbestown amassing over 2500 acres in less than a day. Devastating and I pray for all those affected by this wildfire. I dearly hope they contain it soon.

A good time was had up in Forbestown on the 5th of August. It was the annual Forbestown Daze celebration with booths in the park, gun fighters at the museum in Old Town and the parade. Along with the usual parade entrants of firetrucks and Smokey Bear, Liberty Chapter of DeMolay and Chico Shrine Club mini car drivers participated in Forbestown's little parade along with some of the brethren of Forbestown Lodge. DeMolay manned a booth in the park and passed out information on our various groups and Forbestown Lodge held an open house. The weather cooperated and was not hot. It was a great day for fun.
News from DeMolay's Liberty Chapter
As forwarded to me:
Liberty Chapter has been having a lot of fun lately. We enjoyed the time we spent with the Masons during Forbestown Daze, from parking cars, serving sno-cones and participating in the parade. There was a video game tournament on Aug. 26th at the Corinthian Hamilton Lodge, it was great.
In September we will be helping the TT Smith Lodge with their picnic at Plumas Lake on the 10th. On the 16 and 17th we will be parking cars at the Lodi Grape Festival. Coming up in October on the 14th at 7 p.m. is our Installation of Officers, with David Ricketts as the Master Councilor Elect. We hope to see you there.

The History Corner
While working on genealogy for the YFHA I came across an article from a newspaper describing an event at Amapola Chapter from March of 1897. I love this stuff! Some of our past Brethren have been members of Amapola and or their wives. I recently found that Myra Zirion, wife of Past Master Charlie Zirion, had been a member.

A very enjoyable Evening Was Spent by All.
On Saturday evening a large number of visitors were invited to enjoy an evening with the members of Amapola Chapter O.E.S. The committee in charge were W.H. Dixon, Mrs. R.S. Powers and Miss Mattie Elliott and they acquitted with much credit.
About seventy or eighty persons were present during the evening . After a short address of welcome by W. H. Dixon the members of the Mandolin and Guitar club rendered a selection in a manner that reflected much credit upon their teacher, Prof. Bair, and gave a good deal of pleasure to all present. They were encored and responded by giving a second selection. Following this was a song by Miss Mattie Elliott who was encored and sang a second time. An instrumental trio- three guitars- Prof. Bair, Mrs J. A. Snell and Miss Evelyn Matthews, was applauded by all in a hearty manner. Then a large number of quotations were given out in the following manner: Each one present was handed two slips, being halves of two different quotations, and it was required that each one hunt up the other parts of the quotation so that when all were placed together every person would have one complete quotation. The plan was an admirable one for it got all up and moving about the floor so that restrain and formality were broken up. After the quotations were found and placed together the Mandolin and Guitar club favored all with a selection ans were encored and played a second time. The members show much proficiency and skill and do credit to their able teacher. Miss Holland favored the audience with a recitation which was so good and so well received that all asked for a second one which was also exceedingly well rendered. Refreshments elegant and substantial and abundant in supply were then served to all present. The gathering broke up at midnight and we think every person present voted the entire evening a grand success. |
