The History Corner - Recollections..
Well, a bit of a change in this corner of the Trestleboard. I received two articles to publish in the "From the East" area of this Trestleboard. One, from Dustin Day, was time sensitive and so I chose to put it at the beginning of this. The other, I really enjoyed and thought about saving it for July's Trestleboard but really wanted to publish it. So, it is a bit of History, kind of, but I like the title our
Treasurer chose "Recollections". So that is what we have in this Corner today, Recollections from our Treasurer, Fred Morrison. Thank you Fred! While rooting around the garage recently, I opened a box of old stuff to see what it contained. There was a photo of our newly chartered DeMolay Chapter in Garden Grove, California, taken in 1953. I then remembered times we spent with the DeMolay Dad Advisors. We were told about Masonic principles and ideas which were to guide us throughout our lives. Well, some of us anyway. I'm sure many were kept from objectionable performances, leading to some major detention , by adhering to these principles. I turned 18, joined the USAF and didn't think much about Masonry for a long time. Then in 1987, while visiting my parents, my Dad and I got into a conversation which led to his involvement in his Masonic Lodge. After a bit, he got up and left the room. He returned a few minutes later and handed me my Grandfather's Masonic ring. I looked at it curiously. He said "I hope that someday you'll be able to wear that". He died a few months later. Another bunch of years down the road and I met Marvin Larson. We were at a computer class in Brownsville. One day I looked over at Marvin's computer and there was a Square and Compass on the screen. I asked him about it and he explained that he was the Secretary for Forbestown Lodge. I asked him how one goes about joining such a lodge. He said, "I thought you'd never ask", and whipped an application out of his briefcase. Since then I have also affiliated with the York Rite and the Shrine. For all of you fun loving Blue Lodge guys, I highly recommend joining the Shrine. And the journey continues... |
